Walleye season opens May 19 and hopefully the mushrooms will be popping as well. It was a little hard to hold the boat because of the wind, but we persisted. I tied on my usual chartreuse jig (1/4 oz.) with a hula skirt type tail and wife decided to use her pink jig with a blue hula skirt. I think she used the pink one just out of spite because I had been teasing her about it being a girlie color . . . .well, pink is what the walleye wanted that day!

After about 1.5 hours of enduring miserable weather, we came in with 2 limits of walleye - of course I didn't hear the end of it about her pink jig.

I had a couple guys get on me about making wife go out in that miserable weather, but I assured them it was her idea. She says, "if it wasn't opening day, I probably wouldn't have gone; I felt obligated to go just because it was the opener". That's my baby!

The next several days were most pleasant and spring-like for Canada: cool in the mornings and evenings, very warm during the day. We kind of enjoyed the snow and colder temps the first day because it kept the black flies down.
They actually weren't too bad this spring. Of course we had the bug jackets available -- if you forget yours, you can get them at H&C Lodge.

When we weren't fishing, we hunted morel mushrooms. This year was a bumper crop!

We took the mule out through some back trails and hunted for about 6 hours on two different occasions - got a total of 805 to cut up and bring home.

The bears were also running around on the back trails -- had a couple surprises, but the bears weren't interested in sticking around to visit -- whew! Sent the wife home at the end of the week so she could go back to work, but I'm still fishing and hunting morels.

Looks like this is going to be a good year for everything so make sure you call ahead to get reservations. There's so much to do up here: fishing, mushroom hunting and in the fall there's blueberry picking. If you're a hunter, check with H&C about bear and moose licenses. As always, check the MNR rules and regulations for all sports.

More later -- Bob

Fall Report

It's fall fishing time and the guys have arrived at H&C to experience wonderful fall weather and do some fishing.

Henri says the bears are on the prowl right now. So, beware when you're out -- watch for bears.

The weather is gorgeous up there -- mid to high 70's, possibly higher as the week progresses.
